Frequently Asked Questions

About the Gallery

Do I need to make an appointment?

We always encourage customers to make an appointment with a specialist to ensure they have the best gallery experience. Customers are still welcome to come in during business hours, but we encourage scheduling instrument appointments directly with specialists whenever possible.

Should I bring anything to my appointment?

We recommend bringing in your clarinet, mouthpiece, reeds, and some music you are very comfortable playing. We have several instruments that we will try during your appointment, but starting with the instrument you know best gives the best baseline for comparison. Having that instrument present can help confirm when a new or new to you instrument is the right next step on your clarinet journey.

What do you recommend for maintenance?

Clarinets should be brought in for repair adjustments with a trained repair tech at least once a year. After a year of normal wear and tear from routine use, most clarinets will need some mechanism adjustments, pad and cork replacements, and/or bore oiling. Bore oil will prevent the wood of your clarinet from drying by returning moisture to the wood. It can be done once or twice a year to the bore and the outside of your clarinet. Visit your local Schmitt Music or contact the gallery for information about repair and maintenance services.

My clarinet cracked! What do I do?!

Don’t worry! Even the most careful player can have their clarinet crack. While it’s important to maintain proper care and maintenance to try to mitigate the chances of cracking, it is not the end of your clarinet if it cracks. If your clarinet has cracked, it's important to address the issue promptly to prevent a larger repair. Here are the best steps:

  • Stop playing immediately. Playing on a cracked clarinet can make a crack grow and may turn into a more costly repair.
  • Contact the Clarinet Gallery team to discuss the crack on your clarinet, review if your instrument is covered under warranty, and we will either facilitate a warranty repair from the manufacturer if applicable or connect you with the most qualified instrument repair technician to repair the crack.
